Almendralejo ( Extremadurian Almendralehu or Almendraleju ) is a city in the Spanish province of Badajoz in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura . Almendralejo is the administrative center and largest city of the Comarca Tierra de Barros and seat of the council that regulates the designation of origin of the Ribera del Guadiana wine region .

With 33,474 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019), Almendralejo is the fourth largest city in the Badajoz province and the sixth largest in Extremadura .
87.8% of the inhabitants are native to Spain, 80.5% from Extremadura , 79.6% from the Badajoz province and 49.1% from Almendralejo. The population growth is 2.7% (2001-2008 average).
The population is 52.3% male and 47.7% female.

Sports
FC Extremadura from Almendralejo played two seasons in the first-class Primera División . In 2010 the association was dissolved due to financial problems. The successor club Extremadura UD has played in the second-rate Segunda División since 2018 .
