history
In the municipality of Azuaga the remains of more than 30 Neolithic large stone graves ( dolmen ) have been discovered. The remains of 4 Roman grave steles are kept in the town hall. A column with a capital in the Ermita de Humiladero may come from the Visigothic period . The geographer al-Idrisi first mentions the place, secured by a fortress ( kasbah ) , in the 12th century under its current name. Around the year 1236 Azuaga was taken over by the Christian armies under King Ferdinand III. recaptured from Castile ( reconquista ) ; this handed him over to the care of the Order of Santiago . The city experienced its heyday in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
