Villanueva de la Serena ( Extremadurian Villanueva e la Serena or Villanueva la Serena ) is a city in the Spanish province of Badajoz in the autonomous community of Extremadura . It is 4 km to the left of the Guadiana and its tributary Zújar in the hilly landscape of La Serena, where cattle are raised. Melons are an agricultural specialty of the city . Villanueva and the neighboring town of Don Benito form the Don Benito – Villanueva de la Serena conurbation , which is the third largest agglomeration in Extremadura with 25,667 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) . The two cities also jointly assume the function of the administrative headquarters of the Las Vegas Altas comarca .

history
In Roman times there was a settlement near the present-day city, of which remains can be found. Villanueva de la Serena itself was built by the order of knights of Alcántara , to whom the area had been donated by Ferdinand IV .

With 25,576 inhabitants (2008), Villanueva is the fifth largest municipality in the Badajoz province . The core city has 21,885 inhabitants. A segregation process is currently underway so that the largest district of Valdivia (1,881 inhabitants) becomes an independent municipality.
96.1% of the population are native to Spain, 86.4% from Extremadura , 83.5% from the province of Badajoz and 60.8% from Villanueva. The population growth of 0.9% (2001-2008 average) is well below the Spanish average.
The population is 49.2% male and 50.8% female.
