Don Benito is a Spanish city in the province of Badajoz in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura .
geography
Don Benito is located on the Guadiana River , has 37,151 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and forms a joint urban area with the city of Villanueva de la Serena (around 25,000 inhabitants), which is five kilometers away . Don Benito has an area of 561.6 km². Neighboring cities are Trujillo in the north, Villanueva de la Serena in the east and Medellín and Mérida in the west. After Madrid is about 300 kilometers.
Don Benito is on the railway line from Mérida to Puertollano . The height above the sea is 280 m.
history
Don Benito was founded in the 15th century by residents of the surrounding areas who relocated because of the floods of the Guadiana. In the village, craft businesses for clothing and food such as flour and oil as well as trading operations for wheat, wine, fruit and vegetables emerged.
Sights, culture and sports
In Don Benito there are historical church buildings (Iglesia de Santiago from the 16th and 17th centuries, Iglesia de San Sebastián, a Carmelite monastery founded in 1883, several chapels), theaters (Teatro Imperial, Anfiteatro de Ave María), an ethnological museum and one of Rafael Moneo designed culture house.
Don Benito was one of the venues for the U-16 European Football Championship in 1988 and the U-18 European Football Championship in 1994 . In 2004 the Spanish Road Cycling Championship took place in Don Benito.
