Reina is a place and a municipality ( municipio ) with 153 inhabitants (as of 2019) in the southeast of the Spanish province of Badajoz in the autonomous community of Extremadura .

location

The place Reina is about 127 km southeast of the provincial capital Badajoz or about 135 km north of Seville at an altitude of about 735 m above sea level. d. The climate in winter is temperate, in summer it is warm to hot; the rather low amounts of precipitation (approx. 600 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

The significant population decline in the second half of the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the resulting loss of jobs.

The people of earlier times lived essentially on farming as self-sufficiency ; Traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds also settled in the village.

history

The history of the place begins with the settlement Regina Turdolorum , mentioned in Roman sources and located at the intersection of two Roman roads , which later sank into insignificance. The partly in rammed earth manner established Moorish fortress ( alcazaba ) on the nearby hill was built in 11-12. Century; it was at the beginning of his rule by the Leonese King Alfonso IX. (ruled 1188–1230), who lost it a few years later to the Almohads , who in turn expanded them in the following years. The place and castle were in 1246 by the troops of Ferdinand III. (ruled 1230–1252) recaptured ( reconquista ) , who handed them over to the Order of Santiago .

Attractions

• The most important attraction of the place is the fortress ruins located on the neighboring mountain at an altitude of 825 m. Inside a wall ring with 15 towers there are two cisterns (aljibes) - one from Islamic, the other from Christian times. Several larger granite stones can be seen in the outer wall of one of the towers , which can be understood as an indication of an ancient use of the square. Several sections of the wall ring have been protected from further weathering by plastering.
• The Ermita de la Virgen de las Nieves standing on the fortress hill is a building from the 15th century - i.e. the time when the hill was still inhabited. Several capitals can also be dated to the Visigothic period . During a restoration in 2008/09 traces of frescoes were discovered.
• The simple church of San Sebastián is in the village and also dates from the 15th century.
• There are two wells with cattle troughs (abrevaderos) in the village .
