1988 European Under-16 Football Championship

The 6th U-16 European Football Championship was held in Spain from May 11-21, 1988 . The hosts won with a 4-2 win over Portugal on penalties . In the match for third place, the defeated East Germany , the Federal Republic with 5: 4 on penalties. It was the last meeting of two teams from the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR at an international soccer tournament.

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners reached the semifinals. The semi-final winners reached the final, the semi-final losers played for third place.

Since the GDR and Sweden were tied on points and goals after the preliminary round, a penalty shoot-out was scheduled. The GDR won this 5: 4 and became group winners.
