The GDR U-16 national soccer team was a selection team made up of soccer players from the GDR . As an older youth selection, she belonged to the German Football Association and represented it internationally at the U-16 level . In addition to friendly games against the national teams of other national associations, the selection took place at the U-16 European and U-16 World Championships .

history

The team became vice European champions in Denmark in 1989 . In addition, she achieved the bronze medal in 1988 and fourth place twice ( 1985 and 1986 ). In 1982 she failed in the second round of the European Championships at the DFB-U-16 and in 1984 in the group stage - again with games against the Federal Republic (0: 5, 0: 1) - eliminated.

At the 1989 World Cup , she lost with Frank Rost and René Rydlewicz in the quarter-finals against hosts Scotland . In his last tournament appearance before reunification , the team with the later vice world champion Bernd Schneider at the home European championship in 1990 already ended in the preliminary round.

In the 1980s , the selection trained, among others, Lothar Priebe (U-16 EM 1986), the later DFB junior coach Frank Engel (U-16 EM 1985 and 1988), the ex-national player Eberhard Vogel (U 16- EM and World Cup 1989) and the former league player Horst Slaby (U-16 EM 1990).

Participation in U-16 world championships

Since the GDR U16 was absent from the premiere of this FIFA competition in 1985 due to ambiguous selection criteria (Hungary was invited by the world association ) and as fourth of the U-16 EM in 1987 with only three European starting places also narrowly missed the tournament in Canada in 1987, the East German youth selection before the dissolution of the country only once at the World Cup.
