The U-20 national soccer team of the GDR was a selection team of soccer players from the GDR . She was one of the youth representatives of the German Football Association and represented it internationally at the U-20 level . In addition to friendly matches against the national teams of other national associations, the selection took place at the U-20 World Championships .

With the title at the Junior European Championship in 1986 , due to the late staging of the U-19 , and third place at the U-18 European Championship in 1988 , the GDR selection qualified for the World Championships twice at the end of the 1980s . The GDR had previously been absent from the tournaments from 1977 to 1985.

Before the trip to South America in autumn 1987, the team had its premiere in a friendly against Poland . Before the World Cup on the Arabian Peninsula in early 1989, coach Lothar Priebe's selection in 1988 had contested three preparatory matches against other nations.

While the team was eliminated in the preliminary round in Saudi Arabia in 1989 , the GDR U-20 won a medal two years earlier. At the tournament in Chile , Eberhard Vogel's team won the match for third place after a penalty shoot-out against the hosts .

At the time of these two tournaments, the players had already outgrown the junior age at club level. They either already played - more or less regularly - in the top division of GDR football , the Oberliga, or were active in the league with their football clubs or company sports associations.
