Presidential election in Indonesia 2014

The 2014 Indonesian presidential election took place on July 9, 2014. According to the official count, the governor of the capital province Jakarta , Joko Widodo (called Jokowi) prevailed against ex-General Prabowo Subianto (46.85%) with 53.15% of the vote .

Prabowo Subianto accused the electoral commission of fraud and announced that he would be suing the constitutional court. The court upheld the result, however, and Jokowi was sworn in as the new president on October 20.

Candidates

  • Prabowo Subianto stood for the party of the Great Indonesia movement (Gerindra). Prabowo is a retired general and former commander of the Kostrad Strategic Reserve Command . He is the son-in-law of the former long-time dictator Suharto . He is accused of involvement in the massacre in East Timor in the 1980s. His vice presidential candidate was Hatta Rajasa ( PAN ). In addition, his candidacy was supported by Golkar , the DP , the PKS and the PPP . Together with 353 seats, these parties have a majority in the House of Representatives.
  • Joko Widodo , commonly known as Jokowi , was established by the Democratic Party of Struggle of Indonesia (PDI-P). The trained forestry and furniture entrepreneur was governor of the Indonesian capital Jakarta until his election . His vice-presidential candidate was Jusuf Kalla (Golkar), who was vice-president from 2004 to 2009. The candidacy was not supported by Golkar, but by the PKB , Hanura and Nasdem . The support parties are in the minority in the House of Representatives with a total of 207 seats.
