Golkar is a political party in Indonesia . The official name is Partai Golongan Karya (Party of Functional Groups). Under President Suharto , Golkar was the ruling party. After taking power, the Golkar won the 1971 parliamentary elections with over 62% of the vote. The party was also able to win the following, undemocratic elections. After Suharto's resignation in 1998, the Golkar lost its approval.

In the parliamentary elections of April 5, 2004, the party received 21.6% of the vote and 128 of 550 seats.

The presidential candidate Wiranto was eliminated in the 2004 election in the first ballot. With 22% of the vote he was behind the eventual winner Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from the Democratic Party and the incumbent Megawati from the PDI-P . However, the Golkar member Jusuf Kalla ran as Vice President for Yudhoyono and held the office from 2004 to 2009. Kalla was chairman of the Golkar from December 2004 to 2009. The politician Airlangga Hartarto has been party chairman since 2017.
