In 1997 he became Chief of the Armed Forces Social and Political Affairs Staff ( Kassospol Abri ). In between, he completed military courses in the United States and Europe and earned an MA in business management from Webster University . During Operation Donner , Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was Lieutenant General Military Chief for Territorial Affairs, which is why critics ascribe at least part of the responsibility for the wave of violence that killed around 3,000 people. After the Indonesians withdrew from East Timor , he defended the human rights violations during the occupation as not so bad compared to the events in Rwanda , Bosnia-Herzegovina or Nazi Germany . He spoke of a "conspiracy, an international movement (...) that wants to sideline Indonesia with these events."

minister

In the cabinet of Abdurrahman Wahid , Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was appointed Mining Minister in October 1999. In August 2000 he became the coordinating minister for politics and security. Under international pressure, he assumed responsibility for the murder of Western aid workers in West Timor by pro-Indonesian militias from East Timor the following month. After initially denying their existence, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono disarmed the militias. On April 1, 2000, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono retired from active military service.

Until March 2004 he remained the coordinating minister for politics and security in the cabinet of President Megawati Sukarnoputri . In 2004 he prevailed in the first direct election for Indonesian President in the second ballot against Megawati Sukarnoputri. He was supported by three parties, including the Democratic Party he founded .

Presidency

In the second direct election for the Indonesian President, which took place on July 8, 2009, in the first ballot he clearly prevailed against his opponents, the former President Megawati Sukarnoputri and his candidate for Vice-President Jusuf Kalla from the influential Golkar . After Vice President Kalla ran against him, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ran with the new Vice President candidate Boediono , the former governor of Bank Indonesia .

During Yudhoyono's tenure, the number of attacks by Sunni Muslims on religious minorities increased. The economy slowly got out of step, so the IDX slipped back to the previous year's level (as of June 18, 2012).
