Watch Indonesia!

Watch Indonesia! eV is a German association based in Berlin . It was founded in 1991 by Indonesians and Germans in Berlin in response to the massacre at the Santa Cruz Cemetery in East Timor and sees itself as a bridge for Indonesian and East Timorese civil societies and aims to sensitize politics and the public in Germany to their concerns.

The association advocates the observance of human rights, the promotion of a democratization process, the protection of the environment and a peaceful solution to conflicts. The association pursues these goals through political education, lobbying and public relations work, intercultural exchange and networking.

The association works closely with Indonesian and East Timorese democracy, human rights and environmental groups. Until 1998 the work was determined by the fight against the dictatorship of President Suharto. The association denounced human rights crimes and stood up for the right to self-determination of the East Timorese. Watch Indonesia! contributed to changing the perception of the Suharto regime in Germany. In 1998 Indonesia was able to overcome the dictatorship. In 1999, the organization participated in the international observers of the UN referendum to resolve the East Timor conflict .

The topics on which Watch Indonesia! works are: dealing with the burdened past, democratization, crisis prevention and peacebuilding, ending impunity, environmental and climate justice , economic and social human rights, land and indigenous rights as well as society and religion. In Western New Guinea , the association works for a dialogical solution to the conflict and in Aceh for the consolidation of peace. The association warns of the social, human rights and ecological consequences of the exploitation of nature through palm oil monocultures, mining, the paper industry and the timber industry.

The association publishes the Suara magazine for Indonesia and East Timor and also publishes other publications such as human rights and background reports. The website offers a pool of information. Seminars, events and exhibitions are also organized, and guests from Indonesia and East Timor are invited to political visit programs. Requests for further information are being processed.

Exhibitions

Together with Terre des hommes , the association is presenting the exhibition “The Lost Voice - A Photo Reportage by Masaru Goto” on the Indonesian province of Aceh .
