Austria was able to qualify for the 2007 Junior World Cup in Canada by reaching the semi-finals at the U-19 European Football Championship in Poland in 2006 , where it failed because of the eventual winner Spain . In Group A they met Congo, hosts Canada and Chile (0-0). They beat Gambia in the round of 16, just like the USA in the quarter-finals. In the semifinals they met the Czech Republic, which they lost. In the game for third place, the previous group opponent Chile waited, which this time had to admit defeat. The team around captain Sebastian Prödl and coach Paul Gludovatz sparked a small wave of euphoria with this fourth place a year before the home European championship . The quarter-finals, semi-finals and the third place match were even broadcast on ORF .

World Cup 2011 in Colombia

Austria qualified together with five other European nations at the U19 European Championship 2010 in France for the U20 World Cup 2011 in Colombia . The selection played in the preliminary round in Group E on July 29 against Panama, on August 1 against Brazil and on August 4 against Egypt. The preparation for the finals was mainly characterized by the fight by coach Heraf to relocate some top performers. The A-team players David Alaba and Aleksandar Dragović received no approval from their club teams. Heraf also had to do without Raphael Holzhauser , whom he assigned a central role in his tactical scheme in advance. Shortly before the entry deadline for the final squad, FC Red Bull Salzburg surprisingly gave the offensive player Georg Teigl the go-ahead, whose release also led to controversy in advance. Martin Hinteregger , a fixed point on the defensive, was denied the release. Of the injuries-related failures, that of Inter-Milan legionnaire Christoph Knasmüllner weighed the heaviest, who had previously performed predominantly in the U19 team. In Colombia, one day before the opening game against Panama, another regular player, Marco Djuricin , fell out due to injury; he was immediately replaced by Radovan Mitrović . In addition, there was a public dispute with his predecessor Paul Gludovatz , who accused him of lacking commitment to the compilation of the squad through the media.

The tournament itself did not go according to plan, as they were eliminated in the preliminary round. Against Panama (0: 0), the eventual world champions Brazil (0: 3) and Egypt (0: 4) they did not score in Group E.
