Franz Bernhard Wohlfahrt (born July 1, 1964 in St. Veit an der Glan ) is a former Austrian football player who played in the position of goalkeeper .
youth
As a young boy, he played football with his brother Mario Wohlfahrt at his hometown club SV St.Veit . He actually came to Vienna Austria only by chance, because actually the "Veilchen" wanted to sign his brother - the younger brother Franz was only a bonus in this transfer. But while his brother could not prevail and moved back to Carinthia , Franz Wohlfahrt benefited from the fact that the then standard goalkeeper of Austria was injured and a goalkeeper position had to be filled.
Career
societies
His first Bundesliga appearance in Austria was in the 1984/85 season. In the following 12 years he became one of the best Austrian goalkeepers and was also the "father" of several Austrian championship titles . In 1989 he was hit with a heavy iron bar by a hooligan from the F-side in de Meer , but got away with a minor injury. The incident, known as the State Incident, had serious consequences for Ajax Amsterdam .
In 1996/97 Franz Wohlfahrt then moved to the German Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart , where he played a total of 118 championship games up to the 1999/2000 season and also celebrated his greatest success: winning the 1997 DFB Cup with Stuttgart.
In 2000 he left VfB again and moved back to Austria Wien, where he was substitute goalkeeper behind No. 1 Thomas Mandl and next to Wolfgang Knaller . In 2003/2004, Wohlfahrt was hired by SC Interwetten.com/Untersiebenbrunn as a goalkeeper and goalkeeper trainer, where he stayed until May 2004. He announced the end of his career in 2002. In 2007 he made a comeback at the Burgenland 2nd division middle club ASK Hirm .
National team
Wohlfahrt made his debut in the Austrian national team on August 18, 1987 against Switzerland (2-2). In total, he was in goal for Austria 59 times. Many people remember the 1998 World Cup qualification when Austria had two top-class goalkeepers, Michael Konsel and Franz Wohlfahrt, who vied for the number 1 in Austrian goal, with Wohlfahrt losing out. He took part with the ÖFB in the 1998 World Cup finals in France .
Career as a trainer and sports director
On January 30th , 2009 he was presented as ÖFB goalkeeper coach with responsibility for the senior national team.
From January 16 , 2015 until his leave of absence on June 12 , 2018, Wohlfahrt was the sports director of FK Austria Wien .
