Marcel Sabitzer (born March 17, 1994 in Wels ) is an Austrian football player .

Sabitzer started his professional career at FC Admira Wacker Mödling , with whom he won the First League in 2011 and was promoted to the Bundesliga . From January 2013 to June 2014 he played for SK Rapid Vienna . In July 2014 Sabitzer moved to his current club, RB Leipzig , but initially played a season on loan at FC Red Bull Salzburg , with whom he became Austrian champions . Sabitzer has been part of the Leipzig squad since the 2015/16 season.

In the national dress, Sabitzer went through various youth teams and has played in the A-selection of the ÖFB since June 2012 .

He is the son of the former Austrian national player and former striker of SV Austria Salzburg and Grazer AK , Herfried Sabitzer . He has a daughter (* 2019) with the winner of the 2014 TV show The Bachelor's degree , Katja Kühne.

Club career

Beginnings

Sabitzer began his career in 2000 in the youth of ESV Admira Villach , when his father Herfried worked for cooperation partner BSV Bad Bleiberg . With the change of the father in the following season to SV Mattersburg in Burgenland , the son came into the youth of the then first division club Grazer AK . At the GAK he developed into one of the club's greatest offensive talents. From 2005 to 2008 he scored 49 goals in 63 youth games and celebrated the runner-up title in the Styrian league with the U-15 team. In 2007 he also secured the Austrian pupil league title as a high performer at the Sports Secondary School Weiz. In the final against BRG Polgarstraße, he scored the first two goals to make it 3-0.

In June 2008 he then switched to the youth of the newly founded SC Magna Wiener Neustadt , but was immediately passed on to the FSA / AKA U-15, which was then still operated in cooperation with Austria Wien . With the FSA he was then champion in the TOTO league and crowned himself with 16 goals in 22 games to the top scorer of his club and third place in the scorers list.

In the 2009/10 season he moved to the academy of FC Admira Wacker Mödling , where he played in the U-17 and U-19 teams at the same time. After a total of 13 goals in 14 appearances for both youth teams, including 5 goals in 5 games as a fifteen-year-old for the U-19 team, he was accepted into the Admira second team for the first time.

First stations in the men's area

Shortly after his sixteenth birthday on March 26, 2010, he made his debut under coach Dietmar Kühbauer for the Admira Juniors in the 0-2 away win against SV Schwechat in the Regionalliga Ost . As a result, he came up to the end of the season on five more missions without scoring.

In the 2010/11 season he was already a permanent member of the junior team in the Regionalliga and started the season as a regular. From 2005 to 2010 he was able to score 78 goals in a total of 100 youth games. On September 14, 2010, he celebrated his debut in professional football under Kühbauer, who has now been promoted to senior team head coach . In his second outing on September 24, 2010, he scored his first professional goal in an away win against FC Lustenau 07, with a final score of 0: 3.

At the beginning of January 2013 he moved to the league competitor SK Rapid Vienna . He signed a contract until the end of June 2016.

FC Red Bull Salzburg

For the 2014/15 season Sabitzer moved to the German second division club RB Leipzig . He signed a contract until June 30, 2018 and was loaned out for one season to club FC Red Bull Salzburg , which is also operated by Red Bull . Thus, an exit clause could be drawn that only applied to foreign transfers.

In his first league game for Salzburg he scored straight away, in the second he scored his first goal for the "Bulls". At the end of the season, Sabitzer and his team were Austrian champions .

RB Leipzig

Sabitzer has been part of the RB Leipzig squad since the 2015/16 season . In the first year he managed to rise to the Bundesliga with the club as second in the table , to which he contributed in 32 games with eight goals. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 28, 2016 (1st matchday) in a 2-2 draw in the away game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim .

At the end of 2017 he was named Austria's Footballer of the Year for the first time , replacing record winner David Alaba , who had previously won this election six times in a row.

In April 2018, he prematurely extended his contract with the club until 2022.

For the 2020/21 season , Sabitzer was elected team captain of the Leipzig team .

National team

From 2009 to 2010 he played five international matches for the Austrian U-16 national team under coach Thomas Janeschitz , in which he scored one goal.

From August 24th to 28th, 2010, he represented the Austrian U-17 national team at the 22nd edition of the international TOTO Youth Cup in Upper Austria . Sabitzer scored once in all three games against Belgium, Croatia and Switzerland and was crowned top scorer of the tournament. In the last game against the Swiss U-17s, he scored the decisive winner to win the tournament. In May 2012, after his good performance at FC Trenkwalder Admira , Sabitzer was called up for the first time by team boss Marcel Koller in the national team's senior squad. He made his international debut on June 5, 2012 in a friendly against Romania . On May 30, Sabitzer scored his first international goal for Austria in a 1-1 draw against Iceland. After scoring against the Czech Republic , he scored the 3-2 winning goal against Montenegro in October 2015 in the current 2016 European Championship qualification .

At the 2016 European Championships in France, he was included in Austria's squad. In the opening game against the selection of Hungary , he was substituted in in the last third when the score was 0-0. The game was lost 0-2. Furthermore, he was in the starting line-up for the games against Portugal and Iceland . After the preliminary round, he was eliminated with the team from the tournament.
