At the draw for the six final groups on December 12, 2015, Austria was placed in Pot 2. Austria was drawn into Group F with Portugal, Hungary and Euro newcomer Iceland. Of all European teams, Austria and Hungary played against each other the most: 136 times before the European Championship - only Argentina and Uruguay played against each other more often. The Hungarians won 65 games, there was no winner in 31 games and the Austrians won 40 games. The last time they met each other was on August 16, 2006 in Graz and Hungary won 2-1. The last win against the Hungarians was on April 24, 1996. Against Portugal, the Austrians won three times in ten games and lost two. Half remained without a winner. The last win against the Portuguese came in 1979 in qualifying for the 1980 European Championship , which both missed. Against Iceland there was one win and two draws in three games, most recently in a friendly on May 30, 2014. Before that, they both met in qualifying for the 1990 World Cup .

The slightly favored Austrians lost the first game against Hungary 2-0, were then lucky against Portugal that they had a multitude of chances and Cristiano Ronaldo shot a penalty against the post, resulting in a goalless draw. They had to win against Iceland to get into the knockout round. But they fell 0: 1 behind in the 18th minute. In the 37th minute, Aleksandar Dragović shot a penalty against the post. Hope sprang up again when Alessandro Schöpf , who was substituted at half time, equalized in the 60th minute. When the Austrians pushed for the winning goal in the final minutes and stoppage time, with which they would have finished second in the group, the Icelanders in turn scored the winning goal. With just one point, the Austrians were eliminated as the last group.

As a result of the European Championship games and a preparatory game, Austria lost the most points of all European Championship participants and eleven places in the FIFA world rankings , together with Ukraine the most of all European Championship participants.
