European Football Championship 2016 / Wales
This article covers the Welsh national team at the 2016 European Football Championship in France . For Wales it was the first participation in a European Championship finals and after participation in the World Cup finals in 1958 only the second participation in a major international tournament. Wales also benefited from the increase to 24 participants.
qualification
Wales completed the qualification for the European Championship in Group B . The Welsh started the qualification with eight games without defeat and fought for a long time with the Belgians for second place. Then they lost on the penultimate matchday in Bosnia-Herzegovina, but were still qualified for the first time. With the win on the last day of the match, they secured second place. The qualification had not started well: after just six minutes they were 1-0 down in the first qualifying game with football dwarf Andorra. Thanks to Gareth Bale , they were able to win the game 2-1. With seven goals, Bale also played a key role in the Welsh success as Welsh top scorer. Twice he was the decisive man with the only goal in the game. Overall, the results of the Welsh were not very spectacular - only when they won in Israel they scored more than two goals. Together with Romania, they scored the fewest goals of all teams qualified with 10 games. In the ten games, coach Chris Coleman used 25 players, of which Gareth Bale, Chris Gunter , Wayne Hennessey and Ashley Williams were used in all ten games.
In the course of their qualification, the Welsh men improved in the FIFA world rankings among the UEFA teams from 41st to 8th place and were thus placed in the top 10 for the first time.

In the draw for the six final groups on December 12, 2015, Wales was placed in Pot 4. The Welsh were drawn in Group B with England, Russia and Slovakia. With 101 games before the European Championship, England are the second most popular opponents of the Welsh after Scotland . Of the participants in the European Championship, only Austria and Hungary , who were also drawn into a group, played against each other more often (136 times before the European Championship). With 14 wins, 21 draws and 66 defeats, the record against England is negative. The last win against England was the British Home Championship in 1983/84 , when it was last played. The Welsh also lost to England at the European Championship, but after taking the lead and through goals in the closing stages. The balance against Russia is also negative. There was one draw and three defeats in four games in the qualifications for the 2004 European Championships and 2010 World Cup . At the EM, the first win against the Russians in the final group game, which made the Welsh group winners. They had laid the foundation for this in the first game by beating Slovakia, against which there had previously only been two games, both in qualifying for the Euro 2008 , where both had won each other and scored five goals. Wales could then only score five more goals against Luxembourg , Slovakia then only five or more goals against San Marino . Wales had previously only played in Toulouse - in 1982 against France - and won 1-0.
As group winners, they will now face Northern Ireland, third in Group C, in the round of 16. If they win, they would face the winner of the game between Hungary and Belgium in the quarter-finals. They can meet defending champions Spain, world champions Germany, hosts France or England again in the final at the earliest. Against the Northern Irish there have been 44 wins, 24 draws and 27 defeats in 95 international matches. The last time they met was on March 24, 2016 in Cardiff , where the Welsh came to 1-1 with a penalty in the 89th minute. The Welsh won the first knockout match between two UK teams in a major football tournament 1-0 through an own goal from Northern Irish defender Gareth McAuley .
In the quarter-finals they met Belgium. Before that, there were four wins, three draws and five defeats in 12 games against the Belgians. The last time they met in the qualification for this European Championship, they parted once goalless and once with a 1-0 for the Welsh. Although they fell behind in the 13th minute, they were able to take advantage of the injuries and suspension-related changes in the Belgian defense and win 3-1, which offset the balance.
In the semi-finals on July 6, 2016, they met eventual European champions Portugal, but had to do without midfield strategist Aaron Ramsey , who had received the second yellow card . Defender Ben Davies was also suspended for the semifinals. Against the Portuguese there was only one win in three previous games - in May 1951 - but two defeats - the last time in June 2000. After a strong, but goalless first half, in which the absence of the suspended Ramsey and Davies made itself felt James Collins, who moved into defense, had twice luck in dubious actions against Cristiano Ronaldo , the Welshmen had to take two hits in the second half and could not score a goal themselves. The Portuguese goal could only put Gareth Bale in danger with long shots, which the Portuguese goalkeeper was able to save. Participation in the 2016 European Championship ended with a semi-final result of 0-2 for Wales. As the winners, they would have met host France in the final. After the tournament was over, two players from the Welsh team were nominated for the team of the tournament : Joe Allen and Aaron Ramsey. As a result of the European Championship games, Wales improved by 15 places in the FIFA world rankings by winning the highest points of all 210 teams listed.
