Wayne Robert Hennessey (born January 24, 1987 in Anglesey ) is a Welsh football goalkeeper. He is under contract with Crystal Palace and is the current Welsh international .

Athletic career

Hennessey grew up on the northwestern island of Anglesey in Beaumaris, Welsh and joined the Wolverhampton Wanderers youth academy in June 2003 . He signed his first professional contract with the then second division team in April 2005, but remained in the junior and reserve team for the time being. In order to collect match practice, the "Wolves" planned a loan deal with the third division club Bristol City in July 2006 . However, this was limited to the month of August 2006 due to the sudden injury of regular goalkeeper Matt Murray ; in addition, Hennessey was not used in the "Robins" due to an arm injury.

A second lending business followed in January 2007. For a month, Hennessey played for the fourth division Stockport County . He remained clean on his debut against Boston United and after five more appearances in which he was also harmless, the loan was extended by an additional month. Eventually, Hennessey remained clean in nine games. This broke (in combination with the nine wins that were achieved with it) a 119-year-old record in the Football League and was named Player of the Month in Football League Two in February 2007 . After a total of 15 missions for Stockport County, Hennessey went back to Wolverhampton in April 2007, where Murray was injured again and only a makeshift replacement was available with the Dane Jan Budtz .

Hennessey was on the bench and when Murray broke his shoulder in the play-off semi- final first leg against West Bromwich Albion , he made his debut. Although the Wolves ultimately lost to "WBA", experts and journalists described the debut as successful. In the 2007/08 season , Hennessey was a regular goalkeeper, especially since Murray had to contend with other injury problems. He completed (with the exception of the League Cup) all competitive games, extended his contract until the end of the 2011/12 season and received with the appointment to the "Team of the Year" of the Football League Championship and the nomination as "Player of the Season" with the Wolves two personal awards.

With a series of eight wins in nine games at the beginning of the 2008/09 season, Hennessey initially built on the good performances. After a 3-0 defeat against rivals Reading FC , coach Mick McCarthy then decided to replace his goalkeeper with Carl Ikeme due to "mental exhaustion" , who promptly took his chance. It was only after Ikeme was injured that Hennessey returned to goal by the end of the season, with an additional competitor being placed by his side during Ikeme's absence through the loan of the experienced Darren Ward . In the Premier League, too, Hennessey did not earn the coach's long-term trust and from November 2009 fell behind the 37-year-old veteran Marcus Hahnemann .

On January 31, 2014, he was signed by the relegation-threatened first division club Crystal Palace .

National team

Hennessey went through the Welsh youth teams U-17, U-19 and U-21. His free-kick goal from over 35 meters in a U-19 game against Turkey attracted particular attention.

Hennessey made his debut on May 26, 2007 against New Zealand for the Welsh senior team when he came on in the second half for Danny Coyne , who was then used only once. He was then the first goalkeeper of the "Dragons" and was not used in the next 44 games only seven times. He made five appearances in the second half of qualifying for the European Championship in 2008 , including a 0-0 win against Germany on the last matchday . As fifth in the qualification group, the Welsh had no chance to qualify early on. In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he was only not used in the last game and did not concede a goal three times in nine games. In fourth place, the Welsh had again missed qualifying. In qualifying for Euro 2012 , he was in goal in all ten games, with two clean sheets. Again it was not enough to reach the finals.

Between February 2012 and October 2013, however, 13 games took place without him due to injury problems, in which he only sat on the bench four times. It was not used again until October 11, 2013 and was used in the last two qualifying games for the 2014 World Cup . However, the Welsh could not qualify again as fifth.

Things then went better in qualifying for the 2016 European Championship , where he played seven games without conceding a goal and made a significant contribution to Wales qualifying for a major football tournament for the first time since 1958 and for the first time ever for a European Championship finals.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was named number 1 in the Wales squad. In the 2-1 opening win against Slovakia , however, Danny Ward was preferred because Hennessey could not play due to back problems. From the second game he was back in goal. Wales made it to the semi-finals, where the team lost to eventual European champions Portugal .
