He was trained at Aston Villa , matured into one of the best defenders in English football with Bolton Wanderers from 2008 and won the FA Cup , the Champions League (both 2012), the Europa League in 2013 and the English in 2015 with Chelsea Championship and the league cup . He has been playing for Crystal Palace since August 2019 . As an England international who would also have been eligible to play for the Irish national team, he was appointed to the “Three Lions” squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the Euro 2016 in France .

Aston Villa (2004-2008)

Cahill began playing football at AFC Dronfield , a small club about ten kilometers south of Sheffield . He showed himself to be so talented at the same time in the center of defense and midfield that several prominent clubs courted him as a U-14 player. These included Barnsley FC , Sheffield Wednesday , Derby County and Aston Villa, and at the latter club he joined the youth department in 2001.

After his promotion to the senior sector, he moved in November 2004 on loan to the second division club Burnley FC . There he made his debut in the league cup against Tottenham Hotspur and although the game was clearly lost 3-0, the then 18-year-old Cahill looked comparatively relaxed for his young age. It was quickly agreed that he should collect more match practice in Burnley by the end of the 2003/04 season. In this way he gained experience alongside the more experienced Frank Sinclair and John McGreal and it was not uncommon for him to be the “last man” on the defensive who was able to clarify dangerous situations. With his strengths both in the air and in the technical area on the ground, he already showed the qualities that would later distinguish him in the Premier League. At the last home game, Cahill received a standing ovation in Burnley; a permanent transfer had never been a serious issue for the financially struggling second division team. He returned to Aston Villa after a total of 32 competitive games and one goal (for the 1-0 away win against Stoke City on January 3, 2005).

On September 20, 2005 he came to the first team of Aston Villa for the first time. Cahill represented Liam Ridgewell in the defense center in the 8-3 away win against Wycombe Wanderers . After a break of several months, he made his debut in the Premier League on April 1, 2006 , when he was substituted on in the course of the 5-0 defeat by Arsenal shortly after the start of the second half. Eight days later he was in the starting line-up for the first time in the derby against West Bromwich Albion (0-0) and overall he was able to convince with good performances in the remaining games of the season - including a goal with a side pull against Birmingham City in another derby. After an injury in preparation for the 2006/07 season, he was only used again in November 2006 against FC Everton (1-0), but from then on he developed more and more into a constant in the defense center at the side of Olof Mellberg or Liam Ridgewell.

Regardless, Cahill's time at Aston Villa came to an end a little later. After two competitive games in the 2007/08 season, the second division Sheffield United under coach Bryan Robson loaned him for three months. In Sheffield he knew how to convince again and when the Bolton Wanderers offered the transfer fee of five million pounds at the end of January 2008 , Cahill moved to the first division club and signed a 3½-year contract there.

Bolton Wanderers (2008-2012)

Although some experts in the media were initially skeptical about the high transfer fee, Cahill quickly established himself on Gary Megson's team . After a successful debut in a 2-0 away win against Reading FC, his performance in the 0-0 win at Atlético Madrid (first leg: 1-0) made it to the round of 16. With Andy O'Brien he harmonized well in the defense center, which was classified as a decisive factor for the Bolton Wanderers' relegation and the first voices were loud about a possible appointment to the English senior team. In the 2008-09 season he was due to consistently good performances increasingly becoming a key player who even at set-pieces began to develop greater goal threat. He scored his first goal for Bolton on October 5, 2008 at West Ham United (3-1) and had two more goals in 4-1 successes against Sunderland and Middlesbrough . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season he was still in extremely good shape and with seven competitive goals until mid-January 2010 he also continued to underpin his offensive qualities. However, a blood clot in his arm made him pause for almost two months and after his comeback against Manchester United (0: 4) the performances were below average compared to the performance.

In the 2010/11 season he was in the starting line-up in 36 Premier League games. After consistent performance again, the rumors that had a possible departure from Cahill to another club in January 2012 became more concrete in December 2011. Since Cahill's contract expired at the end of the season, coach Owen Coyle was ready to sell his player - instead of having to adjust to the impending free transfer in summer 2012, also to reinvest the money in player purchases even in the relegation battle. Those interested included Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Shortly before the turn of the year, Chelsea and Bolton agreed on the transfer fee of around seven million pounds and in mid-January 2012 the transfer was officially announced.

Chelsea FC (since 2012)

Cahill became the fifth England international in the then current squad of Chelsea and took over the jersey with the number 24. He had to wait a few weeks for the first appearance as coach André Villas-Boas intended to integrate him slowly. In the 3: 3 against Manchester United he was part of the starting line-up and although a few goals had to be accepted, the first signs of his future good understanding with center-back partner David Luiz were visible. Due to injuries to competitors in the defense center, he received several probation opportunities and for his performance in the 1-0 victory in the semi-final first leg against FC Barcelona in the Champions League , he was given wide recognition. However, he was injured in the second leg and had to take a break last month, which also meant he missed the victorious FA Cup final against Liverpool . Regardless of this, he reported fit shortly before the Champions League final on May 19, 2012 against FC Bayern Munich . In the game that Chelsea won on penalties, he completed the entire 120 minutes including overtime.

In the 2012/13 season, Cahill established himself further in the Chelsea team. He had to suspend a few games after a knee injury from the 2-0 win against West Ham United . Milestones in the season were international club appearances. There he scored the consolation goal in the Super Cup against Atlético Madrid to 1: 4 and at the Club World Cup he saw the red card in the final against Corinthians São Paulo (0: 1) shortly before the end of the game after an argument with Emerson . In May 2013 he was in Chelsea's final team, which won the Europa League title with a 2-1 win against Benfica Lisbon .

Under new coach José Mourinho , Cahill was part of the most stable defense in the Premier League in the 2013-14 season, conceding just 27 goals. The partner in central defense was mostly the experienced John Terry and the teamwork was so good that voices were heard that recommended this formation for the English national team. Further awards for Cahill were the appointment to the "Team of the Year" in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 ( PFA Team of the Year ) seasons , whereby he won the English championship for the first time in his career in 2015 and only two league games missed. While the subsequent 2015/16 season was disappointing and Cahill only finished midfield with Chelsea, he signed a new contract in December 2015 until the end of the 2018/19 season.

After the 2018/19 season , in which he only made two league appearances, Cahill left the club when his contract ended.

Just before the start of the 2019/20 season , Cahill joined Crystal Palace . He signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2021.

English national team

Cahill was in 2007 part of the English U-21 team and on June 6, 2009, he was due to an injury Rio Ferdinand of England coach Fabio Capello for the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan for the first time in the cadre of senior national appeal. He finally played his first international game on September 3, 2010 against Bulgaria (4-0) alongside John Terry after his partner Michael Dawson was injured. In March 2011 he was in the starting line-up of the “Three Lions” for the first time in the friendly against Ghana and he scored his first international goal in September 2011 in another game against Bulgaria.

Five months after his move to Chelsea, Cahill was a permanent member of national coach Roy Hodgson . He was also in England's original 23-man squad for Euro 2012 , but after a collision with goalkeeper Joe Hart , he broke his jaw in the final preseason game and had to cancel his participation in the tournament. After the European Championship, Cahill played his way into the regular formation in the subsequent World Cup qualification and mostly formed the defense center with Phil Jagielka from Everton FC . In particular, his performance in the important 0-0 win against Ukraine in Kiev, when he was voted " Man of the Match ", consolidated his position in this regard. In May 2014, Hodgson appointed him to the squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . Gary Cahill played in the first game against Italy and in the second against Uruguay . The first game England lost 2-1 to Italy and the second game against Uruguay was lost 2-1. Gary Cahill played through in all two games. After Costa Rica won their second game against Italy 1-0 after beating Uruguay 3-1, the "Ticos" won the group while England was eliminated. Also in the third insignificant game Cahill was used and here he played through.

During the successful qualification for Euro 2016 in France , Cahill remained an integral part of the English team, and after being named vice-captain behind Wayne Rooney in September 2014, he led the senior national team himself for the first time in October 2015 in his absence Captain on the field. At the European Football Championship he was accepted as a regular player in England 's squad in May 2016 . He played all four games for the full playing time until he was eliminated in the round of 16.

During the qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia , Gary Cahill was still one of the regular players, although he was only used twice in preparation after successfully qualifying. At the finals he was part of the English squad , but only played in the third and final group game against Belgium . With the English national team, Cahill was fourth at the end of the tournament. On August 28, 2018, he resigned from the English national team together with Jamie Vardy .
