Christian Liolo Benteke (born December 3, 1990 in Kinshasa , Zaire ) is a Belgian football player . He is under contract with the Premier League club Crystal Palace and is active in the Belgian national team .

Career

In the club

Benteke started playing football at club level at the age of six at Jeunesse Sportive Pierreuse - which has its home in the Liège district of the same name . After eight years he finally went to the youth department of the neighboring first division club Standard Liège . He stayed there for two years and then moved to KRC Genk , where he was part of the professional squad in his second year. At the age of 17, he made his debut in the Belgian first division against VV St. Truiden . In the further course of the season he came on short missions again, but remained only a reservist in the following season. So he returned to Standard Liège, where he scored three goals in nine games and became Belgian champions at the end of the season. However, in order to get enough game practice in the long term, Liège first loaned him to KV Kortrijk and then to KV Mechelen . After the end of each loan deal, he played a few short assignments for Standard, but was finally given back to KRC Genk. He played in the Champions League with the then reigning champions and was eliminated from the bottom of the table in the group stage. In the league he qualified with Genk again for the international competition. In the Europa League and in the league he was still used for Genk, but moved to Aston Villa before the transfer window closed to England . In his first game for Villa on the 4th match day of the 2012/13 season against Swansea City , he scored the 2-0 winning goal. In the 2013-14 season he scored ten goals in 26 games for Aston Villa, but suffered a severe setback in early April. He was badly injured while exercising and tore his Achilles tendon. Due to the failure, he was missing from the Belgian national team at the 2014 World Cup .

For the 2015/16 season , Benteke moved to Liverpool .

He has been under contract with Crystal Palace since August 2016 .

In the national team

With the U-17 selection , he took part in the U-17 European Championship in his own country in 2007 and reached the semifinals there against the eventual winner Spain; he scored his only goal in the game against Iceland. A little later, the U-17 World Cup took place in South Korea . He was eliminated in the group stage with Belgium and scored one of only three goals for the Belgians. He then played for other U national teams, but did not take part in any tournament with these. He made his senior national team debut on May 19, 2010 in the game against Bulgaria , when he came on for Romelu Lukaku in the 65th minute . In 2010 he played two more internationals and only returned to internationals in 2012.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Belgian squad. He was used twice in the group matches when he was substituted on against Ireland and Sweden in the final minutes. The team was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

In the qualifying game against Gibraltar for the 2018 World Cup on October 10, 2016, after seven seconds, he scored the fastest goal in a World Cup qualifying game, although Gibraltar kicked off the game. This record was previously held by the San Marinese Davide Gualtieri , who scored against England after just eight seconds in 1993. He was in the extended squad for the World Cup, but ultimately he was not nominated.
