The game took place on November 17, 1993 at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara in Bologna . The San Marino team kicked off and played the ball forward quickly. However, a short pass intended for Gualtieri was played too long. English player Stuart Pearce tried to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper, but the pass was too weak. The approaching Gualtieri took advantage of this and shot into the goal from close range. At the time of the goal, only 8.3 seconds of playing time had passed. The BBC reporter John Motson described the first seconds of the game in his television report as follows: “So the stage is set for England's last and decisive match in this World Cup qualifying group. England in red, San Marino in blue, England needing to win by a seven-goal margin and hope that Poland can do them a favor against Holland. […] And Bacciocchi, number nine, picks the ball up straight away and San Marino launch the first attack… oh, and a mistake by Stuart Pearce… and San Marino have scored! ... I don't believe this! "

Although England won the game 7-1, the headline in the Daily Mirror the following day read : The End of the World! because England missed the qualification.
