The Stadio Renato Dall'Ara is a football stadium with athletics track in the Italian city of Bologna , region Emilia-Romagna . It is named after the long-time president of the local football club FC Bologna , who plays his home games here. Today the facility has 36,462 places.

history

The Stadio Renato Dall'Ara was built between 1925 and 1927 and inaugurated on May 29, 1927, with a friendly match between Italy and Spain (2-0). The original name of the arena was Stadio Littoriale and the audience capacity was over 50,000. 60,000 spectators are said to have crowded into the stadium for the inauguration. The field was surrounded by an athletics track and opposite the main stand was a large marathon goal. The stadium hosted two games during the 1934 World Cup , and after the fall of the fascist regime, it was renamed “Stadio Comunale” . In 1983 the venue finally got its current name, it was named after Renato Dall'Ara, who was president of Bologna FC for 30 years and died in 1964, three days before the qualifying game for the Italian championship against Inter Milan .

For the 1990 World Cup , the Renato Dall'Ara stadium was completely renovated and the floodlights were renewed. The capacity fell to 39,444 seats.

Renovation work on the stadium has been decided since 2016. Construction work was initially scheduled to start in 2018, but was postponed to 2019. The renovation is to begin immediately after the 2019 European Under-21 Football Championship , where the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara will be used as the venue. It is still unclear where FC Bologna will play its home games during construction. A move to the Stadio Alberto Braglia in Modena, 40 km away, would be possible . The club would like to prevent this, however, so that the fans do not have to travel to away games all the time. Another scenario is the construction of a temporary stadium . Locations are checked for this. Then FC Bologna would have to finance the transitional venue in addition to the renovation. In addition, there is the possibility of partial renovation, stand by stand, where the game can be continued. This was also the procedure for the renovation work for the 1990 World Cup. As club president Claudio Fenucci stated in an interview with Corriere dello Sport in August 2018 , the Renato Dall'Ara stadium will offer 27,000 seats after the renovation work. If necessary, an increase to 29,500 visitors would be possible. 1,500 parking spaces are to be created around the sports facility. The grandstands, previously separated from the playing field by the plastic track , will move closer to the game. Facilities such as bars, restaurants or fitness studios are intended to increase the attractiveness of the facility on non-game days. The work will be carried out while the match is in progress. So far there is no information on costs and financing. More detailed plans are to be published in September of that year.
