That certainly Stadium , formerly Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia , is a work in rebuilding football stadium in the northern Italian city of Bergamo , region Lombardia . It is owned and the home ground of the Atalanta Bergamo football club and, after renovation work in 2015, can accommodate a total of 21,300 visitors. The stadium area is 35,000  and is located in the north of the city. The Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia has been under renovation since the end of April 2019 and is to be expanded to 23,370 seats. The construction work should be completed by the 2021/22 season.

history

The stadium was built from 1927 to 1928 and opened on December 23 of that year. It was initially called Stadio Mario Brumana . With a lawn area of 120 × 70  m , it was suitable for both football and rugby games. As early as November 1, 1928, the game Atalanta Bergamo against Triestina Calcio was the first football match. At that time, the stadium consisted only of the uncovered main and the covered opposite stands and offered space for 12,000 spectators.

Over the years, the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia has been rebuilt again and again, the two curves have been added, the main stand roofed over and the athletics facility has been removed. As a result, the capacity rose to currently approx. 27,000 seats, around 8,000 of which are seats. From the 2003/04 season, the UC AlbinoLeffe also played their home games in the Atleti Azzurri d'Italia. After the small club from Albino and Leffe , located northeast of Bergamo, was promoted to Serie B, their own venue no longer met the requirements. For the season 2019/20, the club left the stadium and moved to the Stadio Comunale Città di Gorgonzola in the Lombardy Gorgonzola order.

In May 2017, Atalanta Bergamo acquired the facility from the city. The deadline for submitting a purchase offer ended on May 8th. In addition to Atalanta, the second user, UC AlbinoLeffe, also offered. Atalanta was awarded the contract for EUR 8.6 million. Part of the purchase agreement is that the club must completely renovate the stadium within six years, taking into account the historical parts of the building. The converted venue will offer around 23,000 seats.

In November 2017, a design for the venue was published by Studio De8 Architetti. The studio was previously commissioned to renovate the two current tiers and the training center. The cost of the renovations should amount to 35 million euros . As specified by the municipality of Bergamo, the listed facades and the two roofs of the longitudinal stands remain untouched. The fan curves behind the goals are straightened and move closer to the pitch. In order to achieve the desired number of seats of 24,000, these single-story tiers will be increased to 37 meters. The new tiers and the surroundings of the stadium will be designed in different shades of gray. Black, white and blue spots are distributed on it, according to the club colors of Atalanta. The facades of the converted tiers are clad with cushions made of the plastic ETFE . The best known example of this is the Allianz Arena in Munich . A large public square with 6,000 m² will be created on the south stand.

With the renovation of the stadium, the name will also change. At the end of April 2018, club president Antonio Percassi announced that the electrical engineering company Gewiss would become the name sponsor of the Nerazzurri home . The contract does not affect the existing names of the stands, which are named after previous players in the club. From the 2019/20 season, the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia will become the Gewiss Arena .

In October 2018, After a long wait, Atalanta Bergamo received approval for the renovation of the facility. With the purchase of the venue, the club committed to renovate the stadium by 2023.

On April 29, 2019 Atalanta played  their last home game against Udinese Calcio (2-0) in the old stadium in front of 18,663 spectators. The next day, the renovation work on the venue began at a cost of 40 million euros. The last two home games of the season against CFC Genoa and US Sassuolo Calcio will be played at the Mapei Stadium - Città del Tricolore in Reggio nell'Emilia .

Atalanta reached the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League and the club will have to move due to construction work. Atalanta will play its home games in the premier class in the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, 60 km away .

The renovation work will be suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , which is particularly badly affecting the city of Bergamo. The ban on work prevented the completion of the reconstruction of the back gate in the north. The panels for the exterior cladding are on site but could not be installed. This is a prerequisite for the continuation of the renovation work. The newspaper L'Eco di Bergamo reports three possibilities for the progress of the renovation with regard to the planning. The first two scenarios provide for the end of the season or ghost games in front of empty stands. The north tier could be completed in a timely manner and the demolition of the south stand could begin. Originally, after the last home game of the season on May 24th against Inter Milan , the demolition work on the south tier was to begin. In the third scenario, the season would end in summer. This would postpone the work and the other construction phases and delay completion.
