The Stadio Mario Rigamonti is a football stadium in the Italian city of Brescia in Lombardy .
It is the home of the Brescia Calcio football club , which has been back in Serie A , the highest league in Italy , since summer 2019 . The previous capacity of over 27,000 seats had to be reduced due to stricter safety regulations.
history
In the early 1950s, the city council of Brescia decided to replace the largest stadium in the city, the stadium on viale Venezia , with a more modern one. That is why the Stadio Mario Rigamonti was built elsewhere between 1956 and 1959. The arena was named after Mario Rigamonti , a son of the city who was a member of the Grande Torino and was killed in the Superga tragedy in 1949 .
Since then, the stadium has been modernized again and again, in 2007 the audience capacity had to be almost halved due to new regulations on stadium security. After promotion to Serie A in 2010, after the first three Serie A games, the capacity was increased from 16,308 to 23,072 spectators by releasing the bottom tier of the opposite stand and the bottom tier of the main stand. The reason for this change was that the Italian Football Association stipulates a minimum capacity of 20,000 spectators for Serie A. Since 2010, the entire south curve has been reserved for guest fans only.
In 2012, a tubular steel grandstand was built on the north side of the field directly on the edge of the field, which serves as the new home of the Brescia fans. This new grandstand holds 3,702 spectators. The north stand was named in 2013 after Andrea Toninelli, a fan who had an accident on his return from the play-off game against Livorno.
