The Stadio Carlo Castellani is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Italian city of Empoli , Tuscany region .
history
The stadium is mainly used by the FC Empoli football club and was opened on September 12, 1965. Today it seats 16,284 spectators. It is named after Carlo Castellani , a former club player who died in a concentration camp during World War II .
The Stadio Carlo Castellani is not completely closed, but consists of several grandstand elements that surround the athletics track and the football field. The main grandstand, which consists of two tiers, offers space for around 5,500 spectators and is the only one that is largely covered. On the back straight, the only grandstand reserved exclusively for local football fans, as well as on the very provisional tubular steel grandstands behind the goals, there was no roofing at all.
After FC Empoli qualified for the UEFA Cup in the 2006/07 season , some parts of the stadium were renovated to meet UEFA requirements. However, the club did not take part in the competition due to the lack of permission from UEFA.
In August 2015, FC Empoli presented plans to renovate the stadium. Among other things, these include the removal of the athletics facility and the construction of new stands behind the goal, so that the stadium can be more geared towards football. The main and opposite stands should remain in their shape. The measures are intended to increase the available space to over 20,000. According to the plans, the renovation should start in spring 2016 and cost no more than eleven million euros . At the beginning of June 2016, managing director Francesco Ghelfi announced that the final plans would be presented on August 1, 2016. The association has examined several options, but the initial plans are the most realistic in their implementation. The conversion to the new grandstands and modern VIP - boxes would, however, at least 15 million euro cost, according to recent calculations.
