The Stadio Polisportivo Provinciale is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Italian city of Erice in Sicily . It currently has space for 7,630 spectators and serves as the home ground of the Trapani Calcio club .
history
The Stadio Polisportivo Provinciale in Erice, a place with around 30,000 inhabitants in the Free Municipal Consortium Trapani , was built between 1957 and 1960 and opened in the last year mentioned. For the first game in the new stadium, the future user club, the Trapani Calcio football club, and AS Taranto met for a friendly game, which the home team won 3-2. Furthermore, the stadium, which is owned by the Trapani Provincial Administration, underwent extensive renovation in 1987. The sports facility had a capacity of 6,776 spectators, although without the regulations of the Italian Football Association, there would actually be space for 10,000 spectators. However, since the user association Trapani Calcio has moved up to series B , safety-related regulations must be observed, which include reducing the capacity to 6,776 seats.
The Stadio Polisportivo Provinciale has been used by the Trapani Calcio football club since it was built in 1960. The club played under class for many years, never getting out of the third division. It was not until the 2012/13 season that the Lega Pro Prima Divisione achieved their first promotion to Serie B by reaching first place in Girona A. Trapani Calcio is one of the few clubs in Italy's professional football that has its home games in a different location unsubscribes. It should be noted that the city of Trapani is larger than Erice. In the years 1988 to 1990, the Stadio Polisportivo Provinciale also served as the home ground of the US Palermo in some games, as their La Favorita stadium was extensively renovated in preparation for the 1990 World Cup in Italy and therefore no game operation was possible.
International matches have also already been held at the Stadio Polisportivo Provinciale. In 1997 the national teams of Italy and Brazil met for a friendly match in Erice, which the Italians won 1-0. Several international matches for the Italian women's national team had already been played here in the 1980s . In 2003 and 2007 the stadium was also the setting for two U21 national competitions.
