history

The beginnings

The club was formed in 1927 from a merger of the two clubs US Pro Italia and Audace Foot Ball Club and took part in regular league operations for the first time in the 1927/28 season. The team went under the name AS Taranto in the Prima Divisione - at that time this corresponded to the second highest league level - in the Girone D and placed fifth in the group of eight teams. This had the descent to the Campionato Meridionale with the consequence that in the 1928/29 season it was held in four groups, with the number of clubs fluctuating between six and twelve clubs. As the winner of the Girone C, the team took part in the finals of the championship and lost in two games against US Lecce . For the following season, the club took part in the game operations of the now third-class Prima Divisione, which had fallen to a league level after the establishment of Serie A and Serie B in the hierarchy. With a mediocre placement in the lower midfield of the table, the league succeeded.

First promotion to Serie B and the following period

In the following four years, the Apulian club established itself in the upper third of the table in the Prima Divisione, before participating in the final games for promotion to Serie B followed in the 1934/35 season by winning the Girone G. In the away game at the Tuscan club AC Siena , Taranto was able to win 3-1 and thus won the championship of the third-highest league level and rose to Serie B for the first time in the 1935/36 season.

There, however, the club was only able to hold out for one season and was relegated from bottom of the table. In the following year, the winners of Serie C succeeded in re-promotion for the second highest division and again the club then missed relegation in Serie B. During the 1940s, the team again took part in Serie C and was after during the Second World War a merger as US Taranto and briefly appeared as US Arsenaltaranto . In the 1947/48 season, the team reached third place in Serie B, the best placement in the club's history and was three points behind US Palermo , which ensured promotion to the top division. Two years later, the club fell back one league level as third from bottom and then appeared in Serie C for four years until they were promoted again. In 1955 the club changed its name again when it was renamed AS Taranto . In the following five years, the club was consistently represented in the second highest division, after the 1959/60 season was relegated to Serie C. Taranto was then active for nine years in the same division.

Iacovone and the name change of the home stadium

In 1969 succeeded the renewed promotion for the series B, since the US Casertana six points were deducted for sporting fraud, and Taranto thereby advanced to first place. This was followed by participation in the league operation of the second highest division for twelve years in a row. During that time, the club had an offensive player in Franco Selvaggi who won the world title in 1982 with the Squadra Azzurra . The attacker Erasmo Iacovone also went down in history, who died in a road accident in 1978 while working for Taranto and subsequently the club's home stadium was named after him. Head coach Domenico Rosati was also an experienced man on the sidelines, who also coached Serie A teams. Nevertheless, the club was denied promotion to the top division, after the 1980/81 season, the team rose again to the next lower league level. After several moderate years with various ups and downs, the club was renamed Taranto FC in 1985 . The Apulian club also made several name changes later, including in 2004 when it was decided to rename it to the name Taranto Sport .

Bankruptcy and promotion to the professional leagues, further developments

After the 1992/93 season, which the club had ended on a relegation place in Serie B, the club was denied the license for the following season due to its bankruptcy and sentenced to relegation . After the re-establishment as AS Taranto in 1906 followed the classification by the Italian federation in the fifth class Campionato Nazionale Dilettanti , which is led under the name Serie D since 2000 . In the second season after the re-establishment, the team won the championship of the fifth highest league level and was represented in professional football again with the resulting promotion to the C2 series . After two years, Taranto fell back to the amateur camp after missing the league and was able to qualify for the fourth-highest league again for the 2001/02 season. A year later, the breakthrough to Serie B was just missed. In the finals for the promotion for the second highest division, the team lost the first leg with 0: 1 against Catania Calcio , the second leg ended goalless seven days later. After the 2003/04 season, the relapse into the fourth league followed, as the team in the playout games against US Fermana only reached a 1-1 draw and had to relegate due to the poorer placement in the regular season. Two years later, after a success in the promotion playoff, the promotion to the third highest division succeeded. In the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons Taranto Sport was also represented in the promotion games to participate in the Serie B league, but lost to US Avellino and the following year to AC Ancona .

In the league, which has now been renamed Lega Pro Prima Divisione , the team has so far placed itself on solid midfield ranks and secured relegation without major problems. In the summer of 2010 there was another name change of the club, which appeared as AS Taranto Calcio . After the promotion to Serie B was only missed in the promotion playoffs in the following two seasons, the club waived participation in the third highest division for the 2012/13 season and then continued the league operation under the name Taranto Football Club in 1927 in the fifth class Series D continued.
