Fan riots 2007
On February 2, 2007, during the Sicilian derby against US Palermo, there were riots between Catanias Ultras and the police. A 38-year-old policeman was killed in his vehicle, he probably died of internal injuries. The Italian Football Association then stopped all other football games in Italy, including those of the national team, for an indefinite period of time. The club president and owner of Catania, Antonino Pulvirenti, announced that he would withdraw from the football business because of the events, but did not do so.
Match fixing 2015
In 2014/15, the club was the victim of a bribery scandal by President Antonino Pulvirenti, who admitted to having manipulated five games. Due to this scandal, Catania was downgraded to the third Italian division and started there in the 2015/16 season with nine points deducted.
