Stefano Colantuono (born October 23, 1962 in Rome , Italy ) is a former Italian football and futsal player and today's coach .

Active as a player for the US Avellino , Como Calcio and Ascoli Calcio , among others, he later coached the US Palermo , Catania Calcio , FC Turin and Udinese Calcio, among others . He is currently training the US Salernitana .

Player career

Stefano Colantuono went through a variety of club stations in his career as an active football player. He began his career in 1980 with the Roman club VJS Velletri, which only played at an amateur level. There Stefano Colantuono, who was to be found in the position of a Libero , acted for three years until 1983. Then he moved to the third division Ternana Calcio . After a year in Terni he went to AC Arezzo , where he in the series B was used. After a year in Arezzo Colantuono changed again the club. This time he joined the SC Pisa , where he as a regular player for the first time in the first-class Serie A played. The 1985/86 season ended for SC Pisa, which had previously only been promoted from the second division, with direct relegation as third from bottom of the table.

Stefano Colantuono then left SC Pisa and joined the US Avellino , which was then in the high phase of his sporting success. Under coach Luís Vinício , the provincial club from Campania reached eighth place in Serie A 1986/87 , which corresponded to the best placement Avellinos in its first division history. Stefano Colantuono was a key player as a regular player. The following year things went so well for the US Avellino and they had to relegate to Serie B after ten years of first class. To date, Avellino has not been able to return to Italy's football club.

After relegation with Avellino Colantuono moved to Como Calcio . With the team from northern Italy, however, he rose from the bottom of the table from Serie A. Then Colantuono went to Ascoli Calcio . With the club from the brands he also had to relegate to the second division, remained loyal to his employer in contrast to previous relegations and played another year in the second division for Ascoli. With fourth place in Serie B the direct promotion was possible. In the course of the promotion season Stefano Colantuono had lost his regular place. Because of this, he initially resigned from active football and played futsal at AS Roma for a year .

From 1992 on Colantuono was back on the playing fields of Italy as a real football player, but could not build on his old achievements. He only played for amateur teams in lower Italian football leagues. In 2001, the Libero ended his career as a football player in the SS Sambenedettese Calcio jersey at the age of 39 and became a coach.

Coaching career

Stefano Colantuono's coaching career also began at Samebenedettese. In March 2002 he succeeded the dismissed Giovanni Mei at the club and completed the promotion from series C2 to series C1 , which had already been initiated by his predecessor . Stefano Colantuono's team also achieved good results in the third division. They finished fifth in Serie C1 2002/03 in Girona B and only failed in the playoffs for promotion to the second division at the later promoted Pescara Calcio with 1-0 and 0-2. Due to the surprise success with Samebenedettese, Stefano Colantuono was also interesting for larger clubs and received an offer from the second division Catania Calcio in the summer of 2003 , which he also accepted. Colantuono led Catania to a ninth place in the 2003-04 Serie B . Nevertheless, the employment relationship of Catania Calcio and Stefano Colantuono separated after the end of the season. The coach took over from Serse Cosmi as the coach of AC Perugia , who had just been relegated from Serie A, and whom he actually coached to return to Serie A in Serie B 2004/05 . However, Perugia did not get the license for the upcoming first division season due to massive financial problems and had to file for bankruptcy. One started under the new name Perugia Calcio in the C1 series. Stefano Colantuono then no longer looked after the team, he left Perugia for Bergamo .

At Atalanta Bergamo , Stefano Colantuono became a successful trainer. He led the club with a first place and for Bergamo club record significant 81 points in the 2005/06 Serie B back to the top division. The Atalanta Bergamo team also performed well in Serie A. With eight and fifty points, relegation was achieved long before the end of the season and a new club record, this time in terms of the number of points achieved in the first Italian league, was set. Among other things, Stefano Colantuono's team defeated top teams such as AS Roma, AC Milan and Sampdoria Genoa and had a very positive record, especially in home games. With the success at Atalanta Bergamo Colantuono became of course interesting for other clubs. For the 2007/08 season he finally signed a contract with US Palermo .

Stefano Colantuono's involvement in Palermo was marked by frequent coach dismissals. Between 2008 and 2009 he was introduced three times as the new coach by club president Maurizio Zamparini, but three times he was dismissed after a few months. His shortest tenure in Sicily was only a few weeks before he was sacked after the first Serie A game in 2008/09 . Colantuono's time at FC Turin , where he subsequently trained, was similar . Here he had two terms in Serie B and in his second term only missed the leap into Serie A in the final of the promotion playoffs against Brescia Calcio. Colantuono then left Torino and became the new coach of his old club Atalanta Bergamo.

Atalanta had previously been relegated from the Italian first division in eighteenth. With coach Stefano Colantuono succeeded in Serie B 2010/11 with a sovereign first place with 79 points from 42 games and nine points ahead of a relegation place together with AC Siena and Novara Calcio . The rise was overshadowed by the involvement of Atalanta Bergamo in the Italian manipulation scandal 2010, where Atalanta's captain Cristiano Doni turned out to be involved. As a result of the scandal, the club had to start the new season with a deduction of six points. Despite the minus points, the club managed to keep relegation relatively early and safely. In the end, twelfth place jumped out, although without the point deduction they would have played to participate in the European Cup. These satisfactory results meant that Stefano Colantuono's contract in Bergamo, originally valid until 2012, was extended in February 2012 by two years until 2014. Overall, Colantuono worked as a coach for Atalanta Bergamo until March 2015 and led the club for three years in a row to secure relegation. In seventeenth place and after being involved in a manipulation scandal, Colantuono was released on March 4, 2015 in Bergamo and replaced by Edoardo Reja .

For the 2015/16 season Colantuono took over the first division Udinese Calcio . There he was released after less than a year for unsuccessful work.

After a stint at FC Bari in 1908 , he became coach of the US Salernitana in December 2017 .
