Luís Vinícius de Menezes (born February 28, 1932 in Belo Horizonte ) is a former Brazilian soccer player and later coach who spent almost the entire time of his career as a player and coach in Italy .

Player career

Luís Vinício, born in Belo Horizonte in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in 1932 , began playing football at Botafogo FR in Rio de Janeiro . He aroused the interest of AC Napoli , which signed him in 1955. He played in the Napoli jersey for the next five years until 1960. With AC Napoli, as today's SSC Napoli was called until it was renamed in 1964, he mostly achieved placings in the midfield of Serie A , the only thing worth noting is fourth place in the season 1957/58 . That season was also the best of Luís Vinício in the dress of the Neapolitans, he scored 21 goals this season and was fourth in the list of top scorers in Italy's elite league. In almost all other seasons at AC Napoli, Vinício scored many goals this season, but he was denied winning the top scorer list for the time being.

In 1960 Luís Vinício was signed by FC Bologna . In two years for Bologna , he made 47 league games and scored 17 goals. With the FC Bologna Luís Vinício won his first important title as a football player in 1961, the Mitropapokal was won. Apart from the victory in the Mitropa Cup, the importance of which was already very limited at that time, there were at least three other, more highly regarded European Cups, his time in Bologna was not very successful, no further title could be won and Luís Vinício could not even score so draw attention to yourself. In 1962 he went to Lanerossi Vicenza , where he found his old strength again and helped the club to stay in the league several times with many goals. After a few years in which he narrowly missed the title of top scorer, this succeeded in the 1965/66 season when Vinício scored 25 goals for Lanerossi, four goals ahead of AC Milan's Angelo Sormani at the top of the scorers list. For his team, however, the season ended in sixth place, which was definitely a success for a smaller club.

After the 1965/66 season, Luís Vinício moved to Inter Milan , which was one of the best club teams in the world under coach Helenio Herrera and with the dreaded tactics of catenaccio . In the Grande Inter , where stars of the time such as Giacinto Facchetti , Sandro Mazzola and Luis Suárez played, Luís Vinício could not prevail and returned to Lanerossi Vicenza after one season and only eight games. Here he played football for another year, made 25 league games and seven goals before ending his active career at the age of 36.

Coaching career

Immediately after the end of his playing days, Luís Vinício began his first engagement as a football coach. He coached Internapoli Camaldoli SSD , an amateur club from Naples , for a year . After further positions at Brindisi Football and Ternana Calcio , Vinício was coach of his old club SSC Napoli in 1973. In addition to good placements in Serie A, he won the Coppa Italia , the Italian soccer cup, with Napoli in the 1975/76 season . But after the 1975/76 season his work in Naples was over. He became the new coach of Lazio Rome , which he supervised from 1976 to 1978 and led the club from the lower areas of Serie A back to the upper midfield. The 1977/78 season ended with the dismissal of Vinício when Lazio was in great danger of relegation. He then went back to SSC Napoli, where he was dismissed after a successful season 1978/79 in the course of the following season for failure. From 1980 to 1982 he was responsible for the sporting success of US Avellino , located in the immediate vicinity of Naples. In two years he managed to stay up without any problems, but left the club in 1982 to join Pisa SC . Started as a climber in Serie A in 1982/83 , Vinício held the class with Pisa, but had to take his hat off in the following season, which brought relegation with it. After two years as coach of Udinese Calcio , which always ended with results in the lower midfield of the first Italian division, he coached Avellino for the second time and rose from Serie A in 1987/88 , whereupon he was dismissed. After a three-year break, he was coach of SS Juve Stabia in Italy's third division from 1991 to 1992 , which was his last coaching position.
