Angelo Benedicto Miguel Sormani (* 3. July 1939 in Jaú , Brazil ) is a former Brazilian- Italian football player and coach , who with the national team of Italy at the FIFA World Cup 1962 took part.

Player career

Club career

Angelo Sormani started playing football at Santos FC . In 1958 he made his debut in the team around the young Pelé in the professional team. In Santos, Sormani played football for three years before the talent scouts of Ozo Mantova, now AC Mantova , became aware of the 22-year-old attacker in 1961 . In the summer of 1961, Sormani then moved to the Lombard city.

When Sormani came to Mantua in 1961, Ozo Mantova had just been promoted to Serie A after finishing second behind AC Venice in the 1960/61 second division season . In his very first season in what was then the best football league in the world, Ángelo Sormani developed into a regular player and made 31 of 34 possible season games for Ozo Mantova. He scored sixteen goals, which brought him third place on the top scorer list. His club, however, was able to celebrate relegation, it was occupied ninth place. The 1962/63 season ended Ozo Mantova on a midfield place, but this time in the back of the midfield. Angelo Sormani scored many goals again, this time thirteen in number. After the 1962/63 season he changed clubs and from then on played for AS Roma . In the Roma, however, he could not build on the performances from Mantua and only scored six goals in 25 games this season, the Roma finally came twelfth in Serie A in 1963/64 . After only one year in Italy's capital, he went on to Sampdoria Genoa , placed even further down in the previous year's table than AS Roma. But even in the capital of Liguria , Angelo Sormani was not very successful. Although he played in thirty games this season for Sampdoria, he only managed two goals this season and relegation was barely achieved.

In 1965 Angelo Sormani left Sampdoria Genoa and joined AC Milan , which after the departure of José Altafini was looking for a replacement for the star striker who had migrated to SSC Napoli . At the side of his compatriot Amarildo , Sormani developed into a regular player during his time at Milan. In the 1965/66 season he played in 32 of 34 league games of the Milanese and scored 21 goals this season, which meant winning the top scorer's crown. AC Milan only finished seventh at the end of the season, which may also be due to the fact that Sormani alone was responsible for almost half of Milan goals. The following season, AC Milan finished in a disappointing eighth place, Sormani could not build on the performance of the previous season and only scored four goals in eighteen games. In 1967/68 the season went well for Sormani and AC Milan, they took first place in Serie A with nine points ahead of SSC Napoli and Sormani scored eleven goals this season. Through the championship of 1968, AC Milan was entitled to participate in the European Cup of National Champions 1968/69 , where the team of coach Nereo Rocco fought their way into the final after victories over Malmö FF , Celtic Glasgow and Manchester United . There they defeated Ajax Amsterdam at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid with 4-1, Sormani scored the goal to make it 3-1. In the same year Sormani played with Milan for the World Cup , which they won 3-0 and 1-2 against the Argentine Copa Libertadores winner Estudiantes de La Plata . In the first leg in San Siro Angelo Sormani scored two goals to make it 1-0 and 3-0. In the current championship season things did not go so well for Milan, they only achieved a third place behind the ACF Fiorentina and US Cagliari . Angelo Sormani could not end his last season at AC Milan with a title either, they finished fourth in the table.

After the 1969/70 season Angelo Sormani changed clubs again and joined SSC Napoli. In the south of Italy, he played two years less successful football. Although he made a lot of season games, he did not get a great number of goals. However, his club played very successfully in the season and took third place. In 1971/72 they found themselves in midfield and only finished eighth, Sormani only scored two goals this season in 28 games. For the 1972/73 season he went to Florence and played football there for another year, not as a regular player. In 1973 he moved to Lanerossi Vicenza , where he played three more years, first as a regular and then mostly sitting on the bench, before ending his career in 1976 in Vicenza at the age of 37.

National team

After moving to Ozo Mantova, Angelo Sormani took on Italian citizenship and was able to play international matches for the Italian national soccer team . He was in the line-up that the two national coaches Paolo Mazza and Giovanni Ferrari selected for the 1962 World Cup in Chile . At the tournament in South America, Sormani was used in a game of the two-time soccer world champion, namely in the game against Switzerland , the last group game when Italy could not make progress. Despite the 3-0 success, they were eliminated as third party behind Germany and the hosts . In total, Angelo Sormani played seven times in the Italian national football team and scored two goals.

Coaching career

After the end of his career as an active soccer player, Angelo Sormani also worked as a soccer coach for a short time. In 1980 he briefed the team of SSC Napoli after the previous Napoli coach Luís Vinício , also a former Serie A player, was dismissed. In the same year, however, Rino Marchesi replaced him again . Six years later, Sormani took over as coach at AS Roma as the successor to the sacked Sven-Göran Eriksson . In Rome, too, he only held the coaching position for a short time and was replaced by Nils Liedholm for the new season .

Angelo Sormani later worked as a commentator on Italian television. His son Adolfo Sormani also played football, including for AC Parma and Rimini Calcio , but could not build on his father's successes. Adolfo later became a coach and coached, for example, Calcio Portogruaro Summaga and was assistant coach at Juventus Turin from 2007 to 2009 .
