George Edwin Ellison
George Edwin Ellison (* 1878 ; † November 11, 1918 near Mons , Belgium ) was the last British soldier to die in the First World War .
Ellison was from Leeds and had worked as a coal miner. Ellison was a soldier when the war broke out in 1914 and served in the 5th Royal Irish Lancers . He fought in 1914 in the Battle of Mons and then in other battles on the Western Front . Ellison died on November 11, 1918 at 9:30 a.m. while on patrol on the outskirts of Mons . The armistice went into effect at 11:00 a.m. that day.
Ellison was buried in the St. Symphorien Military Cemetery east of Mons. This cemetery also houses the graves of John Parr , the first British soldier to die in World War I, and George Lawrence Price , the last Allied soldier to die in World War I.
