George Lawrence Price

George Lawrence Price (born December 15, 1892 in Falmouth , Nova Scotia , † November 11, 1918 in Ville-sur-Haine , Belgium ) was a Canadian soldier (regiment number 256265). Price is considered to be the last soldier of the British Empire to fall in World War I.

Life

Price was born in Falmouth , Nova Scotia and raised in Port Williams , Nova Scotia. He was living in Moose Jaw , Saskatchewan , when he was drafted into military service on October 15, 1917 . Price served in the A - Company of the 28th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force .

On November 11, 1918, Price was part of a patrol that was to take the village of Havré . When the soldiers crossed the Canal du Center in Ville-sur-Haine , they were shot at by a German soldier. The patrol entered what they believed to be the gunner. The house was empty. The German soldiers had left through the back door when the Canadians came through the front door. The fugitives were followed to the next house without success. George Price was fatally hit by a German sniper at 10:58 a.m. when he stepped out of that house against the advice of a resident. The armistice went into effect at 11:00 a.m.

Price was buried in the St. Symphorien Military Cemetery, southeast of Mons . The cemetery also houses the grave of John Parr , the first British soldier to die in World War I, and the grave of George Edwin Ellison , the last British soldier to die in World War I.
