Tombstone for John Parr

The St. Symphorien Military Cemetery is located about 2 km east of Mons in the Belgian province of Hainault . The cemetery was laid out by German troops in August 1914 after the Battle of Mons and was operated by them until November 1918. At the end of the war in November 1918, there were 245 German and 188 Allied graves in the cemetery. The number of graves rose to 284 German graves and 229 - including 65 unknown - Allied soldiers. The graves of the two warring parties are marked by differently designed tombstones. The cemetery is dominated by an obelisk that the Germans erected after the battle of Mons for the dead of both warring parties. The graveyard is home to the graves of John Parr - the first Allied soldier to die in World War I - and George Edwin Ellison and George Lawrence Price , the last two Allied soldiers to die in World War I.
