history
In the course of the Bandeirantes movement, settlers also came here along the Rio Tietê . At the mouth of a stream (port. Ribeirão ) in the Tietê, they fished a large Jaú fish and named the place from then on Barra do Ribeirão do Jaú . Jaú goes back to the term Ya-Hu in the local Tupí-Guaraní languages , which refers to a large, voracious fish in the region. The settlers who settled here decided to found a village. On August 15, 1853 they founded a commission to found their place. In 1859 Jaú became its own community ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Município ) of Brotas . In 1866 Jaú was elevated to a small town ( Vila ), and in 1889 to a city ( Cidade ). It has also been an independent circle since 1889.
The productive soil led to the nickname “Capital da Terra Roxa” (capital of Terra Roxa ).
