The Rio Tietê is a left, 1,130 km long tributary of the Paraná in Brazil ( South America ).

Rio Tietê

It has its source at Salesópolis in the Serra do Mar, only 22 km from the Atlantic Ocean and flows through the state of São Paulo to the west and within it. a. through the large reservoirs of Barra Bonita , Promissão and Três Irmãos . It flows into the Paraná in the equally large Jupiá reservoir .

When flowing through São Paulo , the river is blocked by unsettled u. a. Industrial and municipal wastewater containing ammonia and phosphorus is very heavily polluted, and fish can no longer live in oxygen-poor water. The mud is heavily contaminated with bacteria and has to be dredged to keep the river navigable. The cleaning up of the river and its banks in São Paulo has long been a mammoth project by the city and the state government. On the other hand, the heavy flooding of the city caused by river straightening and the lack of retention basins was successfully eliminated during heavy rainfall.
