João Ribeiro de Barros
João Ribeiro de Barros (born April 4, 1900 in Jaú ; † July 20, 1947 there ) was a Brazilian pilot.
He was the first pilot from the American continent to operate a non-stop transatlantic flight from Europe to America. On April 28, 1927, four months before Charles Lindbergh , he crossed the Atlantic to the seaplane JAHU type Savoia-Marchetti S.55 . His companions on this flight were João Negrão (copilot), Newton Braga (navigator) and Vasco Cinquini (mechanic). The four planes took off from Genoa and flew to Santo Amaro near São Paulo . They flew over Spain , Gibraltar , the then Portuguese Cape Verde Islands and Fernando de Noronha .
The city of Jaú erected a monument in his honor.
