The Rimini Football Club 1912 (until June 2010 Rimini Calcio , until June 2016 AC Rimini 1912 ) is an Italian soccer club from the Romagna city of Rimini . The club colors are red and white. The club's stadium is the Stadio Romeo Neri , with seating for 9,768 spectators.

history

The beginnings

Initially the club was called Libertas , but the club was renamed Rimini FC in the 1920s . Since then, Rimini has been playing with red and white jerseys. In the 1929/30 season the Stadio Romeo Neri was built, which was then called the Stadio Comunale . In the 1930s, the club played in the championship against regional opponents such as AC Cesena , Ravenna Calcio or city rivals Dopolavoro Ferroviario Rimini .

In the 1947/48 season Rimini Calcio took first place in his group in Serie C ; The goalkeeper at the time, Giorgio Ghezzi , who later played for Inter Milan , who made it into the national team with the nickname Kamikaze , played a key role in this success . Later, in the 1950s, the club no longer played for promotion to Serie B , but against relegation.

In the 1960s, various players shaped Rimini, who subsequently made it into Serie A and in some cases even made it into the national team - such as Sergio Santarini , Sandro Carlini and Franco Nanni .

Promotion to Serie B

At the beginning of the 1970s, the newly elected President Gilberto Gaspari brought new impetus to the club by starting to systematically strengthen Rimini Calcio and promising to make it to Serie B in three years. In 1976 this promise became a fact. However, problems soon arose, as a result of which the coach and later the president were changed. In 1976/77 the club finally rose from a single point missing.

At the end of the season, the coach Helenio Herrera , who had only come a year earlier, left the club again; he was replaced by Osvaldo Bagnoli .

Series C1

The following years were marked by various coach changes, but this did not change the success of Rimini Calcio significantly. 1982 Arrigo Sacchi was committed, who made his coaching debut there. He finished his first season in a respectable fifth place, but left the club and moved to Fiorentina . A year later he returned to the 1984/85 season, but left the club a year later and went to AC Parma .

The 1990s and subsequent years

Rimini Calcio played in Serie C2 in the early 1990s . At the beginning of the season they were classified in the upper midfield. In the 1997/98 season, Rimini played for the first time in years for promotion. However, SPAL Ferrara overtook the Riminese on the last day of the season, so that direct promotion to Serie C1 was impossible. In the first round of the playoffs, Rimini met AC Spezia , who scored the winning goal in the 94th minute.

The following season Matteo Brighi made his debut, which attracted the interest of various Serie A clubs in Rimini. Rimini made it into the play-offs again , but again narrowly failed - this time at AC San Donà . In the 1999/2000 season, the club made it to the play-off final for the first time. On neutral ground in Arezzo , a goal by opponent Vis Pesaro destroyed the hope of the Rimini fans again.

At the beginning of the 21st century, not much changed in Rimini - they continued to play for promotion, but missed it again in 2001 and 2002 when they were eliminated by Teramo Calcio and SS Sambenedettese Calcio .

In 2002/03 Rimini Calcio met in Serie C2 on the team of Florentia Viola (formerly AC Florence), who had been relegated from Serie A, and took second place in the league behind them. Again in the play-offs this time they played against US Grosseto and in the final against AS Gubbio . This time the Riminese club was able to prevail and rose to the C1 series.

For the following season 2003/04 in the C1 series, the team was able to strengthen significantly, and placed at the top of the table. Again Rimini played in the play-offs, but this time for promotion to Serie B. In the derby against AC Cesena they failed without a chance. In the 2004/05 season Rimini played in a group where tough opponents awaited with teams such as SSC Napoli , Avellino Calcio , AC Reggiana , Calcio Padova and US Foggia , all of which had played in Serie A a few years ago. Not unsurprisingly, however, Rimini played for the top of the table with Avellino Calcio. In the end, Rimini was able to secure the top position, making the club play in Serie B for the first time in 23 years.

This successful season was winning the Super Coppa Series C completed. Rimini defeated the winners of the other group of the C1 series, US Cremonese with a 5-2 win, whereby the club could afford a 2-4 defeat in the second game. After a convincing first leg round Rimini got into relegation difficulty in the 2005/06 season after a series of defeats and only secured relegation in Serie B on the last day of the game. For the first matchday of the 2006/07 season, Rimini received the relegated Juventus Turin drawn into the Stadio Romeo Neri. After the announcement of the draw, the sale of season tickets rose suddenly. Rimini scored an historic 1-1 against Juve in the opening game on September 9, 2006, while their captain Adrian Ricchiuti equalized for the Riminese . On December 31, 2006, Rimini Calcio was in first place in Serie B for the first time in its more than 100-year history, and that in a championship that received almost more media attention than that due to prominent teams such as Juve, Naples, Bologna and Genoa Serie A experienced, combined with a real audience boom.

By 18th place in the 2008/09 Serie B season , Rimini was relegated to the Lega Pro Prima Divisione . After failing to return to the second highest division in the 2009/10 season, the club filed for bankruptcy and was withdrawn from play in all professional leagues. Then the club in June 2010 was as AC Rimini 1912 re-founded and participated in the operation of the game fünftklassigen Series D part. There the club reached third place in 2010/11 and rose to the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione after promotion games against FC Turris .
