Paolo Mazza

Paolo Mazza (born July 21, 1901 in Vigarano Mainarda (FE) , † December 31, 1981 in Ferrara ) was an Italian football coach and football functional . The Stadio Paolo Mazza in Ferrara is named after him.

Life

youth

Mazza was born in Vigarano Mainarda, about 9 km west of Ferrara, but moved to Portomaggiore at an early age , where he trained as an electrician and also had little success at the local club AS Portuense in the lower divisions.

Time at SPAL Ferrara

For the first time he trained the team from SPAL Ferrara in 1936/37 after relegation to the third-class Serie C and reached third place there. 1937/38 he was hired by Molinella Calcio 1911 in Molinella , the following season 1938/39 he spent as coach of his old team AS Portuense. In 1939 he returned to SPAL Ferrara for three years, with whom he reached 6th, 5th and second place in the third-class Serie C. After the Second World War he was first sporting director and in 1946 president of SPAL Ferrara, which played under his leadership in Serie B from 1946 and rose to Serie A in 1951 and spent 16 seasons there (1951 to 1964 and 1965 to 1968). This was followed by relegation to Serie C. In 1973 the club rose again to Serie B. In 1976 Mazza resigned as president of the association. The SPAL Ferrara stadium was renamed Stadio Paolo Mazza in his honor one year after his death .

Italian national coach

On May 5, 1962, he and Giovanni Ferrari took over the Italian national soccer team to coach them at the 1962 World Cup in Chile . The most famous game of the Italians at this World Cup was the battle of Santiago against Chile . His record as national coach was three wins, one draw and one defeat in five games. After the World Cup he was replaced by Edmondo Fabbri .

International matches as coach of the Italian national team

In four games under Paolo Mazza / Giovanni Ferrari Lorenzo Buffon acted as team captain, Bruno Mora only took on this role against Chile when Carlo Mattrel took on Buffon.
