Portomaggiore is a municipality with 11,590 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Ferrara. The neighboring municipalities are Argenta , Comacchio , Masi Torello , Voghiera and Ostellato .

geography

Portomaggiore is about 25 kilometers south-east of Ferrara and about 55 kilometers northeast of Bologna in Emilia-Romagna.

history

The first documents that indicate the origins of Portomaggiore date back to 896 AD. The city was first mentioned in a document dated September 17, 955, at that time still as Porto - but it is undisputed that this is today's Portomaggiore. The Estensi had a lasting impact on the city's fortunes. In 1277 they dug a moat from the Po di Primaro to the Valli di Comacchio to better delimit their possessions. They also built several mansions, for example the Delizia del Verginese (see section on culture and sights ).

The castle of Portomaggiore, mentioned several times in the 15th and 16th centuries, no longer exists today. It is believed that it was located in today's Piazza della Repubblica .

The city center was bombed several times from April 13 to 17, 1945, more than 1,000 citizens died. Some private houses survived the attacks, but nothing is left of the ancient monasteries, churches and palaces.

economy

Agriculture and the textile industry, the main economic sectors in Portomaggiore, are becoming less and less important and the industry is still developing. The company Fabbri 1905 , which was founded in Portomaggiore in 1905 and now produces ice cream parlor supplies and sweets in Bologna, should be highlighted .

Transport and infrastructure

Streets

Portomaggiore is located on Strada Statale 16 Adriatica and is only a few kilometers from the Ferrara - Porto Garibaldi connection .

The closest motorway is the A13 Bologna - Padua .

railroad

The Ferrara - Rimini line stops in Portomaggiore, and trains run on the Portomaggiore - Bologna line. Portomaggiore is therefore the most important transfer station in the region after Ferrara. The connection from Portomaggiore to Bando was only used for the transport of sugar beets from 1921 to 1943.

Culture and sights

La Delizia del Verginese

The main attraction of the district is the Delizia del Verginese , a castle near Gambulaga, about 6 kilometers from Portomaggiore. Duke Alfonso I d'Este converted the original country house into a castle in the 16th century and donated it to Laura Eustochia Dianti. After the Duke's death, the lady withdrew and took care of the renovation of the castle. Cavaldi da Parma planned the current appearance: a rectangular base, framed by four towers. There is a small church to the side. After her death, the castle fell to her son Alfonso and then to Cesare d'Este .

There is a natural history museum in the Oasi di Porto nature reserve .

Sports

The city is known for volleyball, but it also produced many famous football players. The football stadium is dedicated to Savino Bellini.

Regional specialities

Portomaggiore is home to the Salama da Sugo , a very soft, almost liquid cooked sausage specialty.
