Bondeno is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 14,065 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Ferrara in the Emilia-Romagna region .

Geographical location

The small town is 19 kilometers west of the provincial capital Ferrara , south of the place where the Panaro River flows into the Po .

history

The city is the center of an agricultural area that used to be famous for growing high quality hemp. The area used to be divided between Countess Mathilde von Canossa and the Estensi . Today, among other things, watermelons are grown in the region.
