history

Goro is located in an area that has been wrested from the Adriatic Sea through lengthy, arduous drainage campaigns over generations. The place originated in the 18th century and is - like the places Mezzogoro and Codigoro - named after the Po di Goro (The fact that the further inland places Codigoro and Mezzogoro are also named after the Po di Goro comes from this: that the bed of this side arm has changed significantly over the centuries: In the Middle Ages, the Po di Goro at Codigoro branched off from the Po di Volano side arm, which ran further south , flowed from there in a northerly direction past Mezzogoro and then turned before Ariano to the east in the direction of the sea. The Po then paved a new path to the eastern section of the Po di Gorao, whereupon the section between Codigoro and Ariano silted up, only to disappear completely in the course of the drainage measures.). Goro was initially a fishing village and then developed into an important fishing port in the northern Adriatic. The main sources of income for the community are deep-sea fishing and mussel farming on the mussel beds of the Goro Lagoon, where mainly clams are harvested.
