In a privilege granted by Pope Marinus II , Bishop John II of Adria was given property, which included a curtis Hadriana . In 1054 Heinrich III confirmed . these territories, which were ceded to the Este family by the bishop in 1194 . With the Peace of Bagnolo in 1484, Ariano came to the Republic of Venice . In the Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto , Ariano initially remained in the Province of Venice, in 1853 it was assigned to the Province of Rovigo. The provincial affiliation remained unchanged in the Kingdom of Italy , in 1867 "Ariano nel Polesine" became the official place name.
The oldest settlement is proven in the district of San Basilio. Finds from the 6th century BC BC confirm the presence of Greeks , Etruscans and Venetians . A Roman port has been proven for the 2nd century AD. The Via Popilia , which connected Rimini to Aquileia , passed nearby. The evidence of a Christian community that built the first church dates back to the 5th century AD. In their place, the Benedictines from Pomposa built in the 8th / 9th. In the 18th century a new church was built, which underwent considerable renovations in the 18th century. In addition to the Romanesque church, an archaeological museum with a cultural center was opened in 1995, in which the finds from the excavations on site are shown.
