Ficarolo is a north-eastern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 2305 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Rovigo in Veneto . The municipality is located about 30.5 kilometers west-southwest of Rovigo and about 19 kilometers northwest of Ferrara on the Po . Ficarolo borders directly on the province of Ferrara ( Emilia-Romagna ).
history
The municipality was first mentioned in documents in 936. In 1152 the Po was flooded, which went down in history as rotta di Ficarolo and devastated numerous towns and cities in the Po delta.
In the border area between Ficarolo and the neighboring community of Gaiba , an ancient Roman homestead was discovered and researched between 1992 and 2000 under the direction of the Bochum archaeologist Hermann Büsing . The highlight of the excavations was the discovery of the intact grave of an Ostrogothic woman, the so-called Lady of Ficarolo . She was buried in full costume between the ages of 40 and 60 and was buried around 460 BC. Born in BC. With the help of the brooches , hairpins and the jewelry, the Lady of Ficarolo could not only be identified as an Ostrogoth, but stations in her life could also be reconstructed.
