history

Rovigo ( Rhodigium in Neo-Latin ) is mentioned for the first time in a document in 838 as Rodigo . The Bishop of Adria temporarily moved his residence here from 920 after his own city had been destroyed by the Hungarians . He had Rovigo fortified to protect against further Hungarian incursions. From the 11th to the 14th centuries, Rovigo was mostly under the rule of the House of Este . The Venetians took the city after a siege in 1482 and kept it in the Peace of Bagnolo (1484). Although the Estonians recaptured it several times, it came back to the Venetians in 1514, who subsequently owned it until the French Revolution .

In 1797 Rovigo fell to the Cisalpine Republic and then in the same year to Austria through the Peace of Campo Formio . Due to the Peace of Lunéville (1801) it became part of the Italian Republic and later the Kingdom of Italy . In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte converted the city and its territory into a duchy for General Anne-Jean-Marie-René Savary , from which he carried the title of Duke of Rovigo. In the city took place on December 3rd and 8th, 1813 fighting between the French under Deconchy and the Austrians under Jelačić ; on December 10th, Rovigo was occupied by the Austrians under Starhemberg . The city now belonged to the Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto . On March 22nd, 1848 there was an uprising here, through which the Austrians were temporarily expelled. Here was born on 15 August 1848 between Field Marshal Lieutenant Ludwig von Welden signed and papal representative the Convention, according to which the Austrians the Papal States cleared and Pius IX. renounced the Austro-Italian war. In 1866, Rovigo fell to the Kingdom of Italy .
