Pietro De Silvestri

Pietro De Silvestri (born February 13, 1803 in Rovigo , † November 19, 1875 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from a noble family and was the son of Count Carlo De Silvestri (1766-1833), Podestà von Rovigo, and his wife Antonia Dottori Sanson, who came from Padua. Pietro De Silvestri first attended the diocesan seminary of the diocese of Adria Rovigo, later he studied at the University of Padua , where he became Doctor iuris utriusque doctorate was. He was ordained a priest . After graduating, he worked as a lecturer in Biblical Studies, Hermeneutics , Hebrew and Exegesis at the seminary of Rovigo, where he was also vicar at the parish church of Santi Francesco e Giustina .

On November 28, 1835, at the request of the Austrian emperor, he was appointed auditor of the Roman Rota . He became pro-dean on November 14, 1851 and was dean of the Rota from April 26, 1853 to 1858. From 1852 to 1858 he was also the Regens of the Apostolic Penitentiary and from May 2, 1853 to 1858 consultor of the Congregation for the Inquisition , he was also consultor of the Congregation of Rites .

Pope Pius IX accepted him in the consistory of March 15, 1858 as a cardinal deacon in the college of cardinals . Pietro De Silvestri received the cardinal's hat and Santi Cosma e Damiano as the title deaconry on March 18 of the same year. Emperor Franz Joseph I appointed De Silvestri cardinal protector of the Austrian nations on October 17, 1856 , a position he held until 1867. On September 27, 1861, he decided on the cardinal class of cardinal priests and for San Marco as the titular church . He was 1869-1870 participant in the First Vatican Council . From March 21, 1870 to August 1871, he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals .

He died in Rome on the evening of November 19, 1875 and was first buried in the Roman cemetery of Campo Verano . Later his body was transported by train to Rovigo and buried there in the family grave.

Act

On September 21, 1858, as the last members of the family, he and Girolamo Silvestri transferred the family library, which contained around 40,000 volumes, to the Accademia dei Concordi , to which he himself had belonged from a young age. The Fondo Silvestriano is a central part of the Academy's library. Pietro De Silvestri was the owner of the house of Petrarch in Arquà , which he bequeathed to his hometown in his will. In his will he left the family's collection of paintings to the Rovigo Seminary.
