Bartolomeo Roverella (* 1406 in Rovigo ; † May 5, 1476 in Ferrara ) was Archbishop of Ravenna and Cardinal .

Life

He was the son of Count Palatine Giovanni Roverella, a citizen of Ferrara and Chamberlain of the Marchese of Ferrara Leonello d'Este ; his mother was Beatrice de 'Leopardi di Lendinara. Another cardinal from this family was Aurelio Roverella .

Bartolomeo Roverella became a doctor of law doctorate , he possessed also has a comprehensive theological education. He began his career as secretary to the Bishop of Modena , after which he was chaplain in the Patriarchate of Aquileia . Bartolomeo Roverella later became Pope Eugen IV's secretary , chamberlain under Pope Nicholas V and auditor of the Rota Romana .

On July 15, 1444, Bartolomeo Roverella became Bishop of the Diocese of Adriatic . On September 26, 1445 he was appointed Archbishop of Ravenna. In 1447 he announced the construction of the majestic Palazzo Roverella in Rovigo . He renounced this archbishopric on January 9, 1475 in favor of his nephew Sismundo Filiasio Roverella . During the Conclave of 1447 he was in Rome . He was 1451-1452 nuncio in England , governor of Umbria (1448-1451), governor of the Marches (1452-1454) and governor of Viterbo (1459). In 1460 it ordered Pope Pius II. To legate in the Kingdom of Naples , he was also from 1460 to 1466 governor of Benevento .

Pope Pius II elevated him in the consistory of December 18, 1461 to cardinal priest , on January 26, 1462 he received San Clemente as the Roman title church . His secretary in Rome was Filippo Buonaccorsi . Back in Naples, in February 1464 he supported Ferdinand of Aragón's claims as King of Naples against René , Duke of Anjou.

On August 23, 1464, Bartolomeo Roverella returned to Rome and took part in the 1464 conclave , which led to the election of Paul II as Pope. On January 8, 1470 he was appointed legate in Perugia . Again he returned to Rome on August 1, 1471, to take part in the 1471 conclave , which Sixtus IV elevated to the throne of Peter. Bartolomeo Roverella was appointed legate in the Mark of Ancona by the newly elected Pope. On January 12, 1476, he was elected Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals .

Bartolomeo Roverella died on May 2, 1476 in Ferrara and was buried in his Roman titular church, San Clemente .
