Conclave 1471
The conclave of 1471 met from August 6th to 9th, 1471 after Pope Paul II died on July 26th, 1471. It chose Francesco della Rovere, who called himself Pope Sixtus IV .
Course of the election
As in previous conclaves, electoral promises were made by the cardinals in 1471 , such as turning away from nepotism and convening a council . The elected, Francesco della Rovere, as Pope Sixtus IV, was then not to keep both promises: only three months after his election, he appointed two of his nephews as cardinals, a council did not take place during his term of office.
Cardinal della Rovere had been known as an astute theologian and powerful preacher even before his election as Pope.
