Berardo Eroli (* 1409 in Narni , † April 2, 1479 in Rome ; also: Bernardo Eroli , Berardo Eruli or Bernardo Eruli ) was an Italian cardinal of the 15th century .

Life

Berardo eroli studied in Rome civil and canon law . Under Pope Nicholas V began his career at the Curia . In 1448 Eroli became Bishop of Spoleto . A year later he became Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome , which he also under the successors of Calixt III. and Pius II stayed. Pius II elevated Eroli on March 5, 1460 to cardinal priest of Santa Sabina . The consistory was held in Siena . During his pontificate , Pius II entrusted him with other important tasks that required his legal knowledge. In 1462 he became a legate in Perugia . When Pius II set out for Ancona in the summer of 1464 , from where he wanted to start a crusade he had planned , Cardinal Eroli accompanied him. The Pope, who was sick at the time, died a few weeks later. At the conclave to elect the successor he did not participate. From 1466 to 1467 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . Berardo Eroli took part in the conclave of 1471 , in which Sixtus IV was elected. In 1474 the new Pope accepted him into the ranks of the Cardinal Bishops and awarded him the Suburbicarian diocese of Sabina . In the same year he laid down the leadership of the diocese of Spoleto in favor of a nephew.

Berardo Eroli had a hospital and a monastery built in his hometown of Narni and eventually died in Rome. His tomb is in the Vatican Basilica.
