In the conclave of 1829 after the death of Pope Leo XII. Cardinal Francesco Saverio Castiglioni was elected. He took the Pope's name Pius VIII.

Pope Leo XII. died after a six-year pontificate on February 10th, 1829. During the vacancy of the Sedis , Cardinal Pietro Francesco Galleffi led the official business as Camerlengo . Two weeks after the death of the Pope, Cardinal Dean Giulio Maria della Somaglia called the cardinals together for a conclave. A few cardinals arrived in Rome after the conclave had begun. On March 31, more than a month later, Francesco Saverio Castiglioni finally achieved the necessary two-thirds majority and was able to take up his new office as Pius VIII.

After the death of Leo XII. there were 59 cardinals. One cardinal, Giovanni Francesco Marazzini Visconti , died on February 18, 1829. Of the 58 cardinals, 50 took part in the conclave. As papabile were Giuseppe Albani , Emmanuele De Gregorio , Francesco Saverio Castiglioni, Carlo Odescalchi , Bartolomeo Pacca and Giacomo Giustiniani .
